David Krider Why is BGP Important?

A few hours ago, Syria, the Middle Eastern country in the middle of an especially bloody civil war, disappeared from the Internet.

Networks are added to the internet by informing the rest of the world as to what path traffic should take, via the border gateway protocol (BGP). It’s as easy to remove a network from the internet as telling everyone else that there simply is no route to that network. Unfortunately, this particular change probably wasn’t done for any humanitarian purposes.
